NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter doesn't think Manny Ramirez would be a problem in the Yankees clubhouse. But the Yankees captain doesn't seem to feel the Yankees need him.

"We have a pretty good lineup," Jeter said. "I think we've scored plenty of runs."

The Yankees did sign a player Monday, agreeing to a one-year deal with right-hander Chien-Ming Wang for $5 million. Wang, 28 and three years from free agency, was last season's Opening Day starter, going 8-2 before a season-ending foot injury. He made $4 million last year after going to an arbitration hearing and losing (he had requested $4.6 million).

The Yankees dismissed a report from a website in the Dominican Republic claiming they were close to a three-year, $75 million deal with Ramirez.
They are interested in Ramirez if his price drops -- he rejected a two-year deal, reportedly for $45 million, from the Los Angeles Dodgers early in the offseason -- and they have room in their budget. Co-chairperson Hank Steinbrenner and others in the organization are in favor of adding Ramirez's bat to the middle of the lineup.

Whether the Yankees can afford Ramirez depends on whether or not a market for him develops and also on Andy Pettitte, who has yet to accept an offer from the Yankees to cut his pay from $16 million to $10 million.
"I would love to see him back," Jeter said.

Minor-league catcher Damian Taveras has been suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for the banned performance-enhancing drug Stanozolol. The suspension is effective at the start of the 2009 season. Taveras, who turned 19 on Nov. 28, hit .229 in 43 games in the Dominican Summer League.
