As the Yankees continue to toy with the idea of signing free agent bad-boy Manny Ramirez, here’s an anecdote worth remembering: In the waning days of the slugger’s career with Red Sox, not only did he fake a knee injury before a critical series in New York in July, he forgot which knee he was complaining about.

The Sox, sensing a scam, sent Ramirez for an MRI — on both knees. Turns out there was no damage anywhere. Ramirez had been exposed as a fraud, trying to weasel his way out of the lineup just as the Sox were poised to take the field against the Yankees.

The rest, of course, is well-documented history: The Sox eventually unloaded Ramirez on the Dodgers, where all he did was take Joe Torre to the postseason for the 13th straight year. Now Ramirez is looking for a pre-recession payday — $25 million a year for at least four years. While the Yankees aren’t actively pursuing him, no one in the organization has ruled it out, either.

Girardi is getting one more chance to undo last year’s mistakes, including his over-reliance on team meetings, his inability to digest and process tough losses and his ill-advised policy of banning junk food in the clubhouse.

The Yankees’ embryonic interest in Manny is driven by one factor only: The man can hit and is showing no sign of decline at 36. Together, Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez would give the Bombers a fearsome middle of the batting order, enough to cover any potential fall-off by Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui, not to mention Robinson Cano’s chronic apathy.

But if they cross the threshold, they’ll discover just how endless three summers can be if Ramirez is bored or distracted. Just ask the Sox, who to a man abandoned Manny and his antics.

Curt Schilling told WEEI in September, “even if we told people the truth [about Manny] they wouldn’t believe it.” The pitcher went on to say Ramirez displayed, “a level of disrespect to teammates and to people that was unfathomable.”

The counter argument, of course, is that Manny felt he’d been disrespected by Sox ownership and therefore shouldn’t be judged by his behavior. The real Ramirez, says Boras, was the one who carried the Dodgers after the trading deadline.

Either way, there won’t be any soft landings in 2009. If ever there was a win-or-else edict issued to a manager — stated or not — it’s about to cling to Girardi like a second skin.

NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter doesn't think Manny Ramirez would be a problem in the Yankees clubhouse. But the Yankees captain doesn't seem to feel the Yankees need him.

"We have a pretty good lineup," Jeter said. "I think we've scored plenty of runs."

The Yankees dismissed a report from a website in the Dominican Republic claiming they were close to a three-year, $75 million deal with Ramirez.
They are interested in Ramirez if his price drops -- he rejected a two-year deal, reportedly for $45 million, from the Los Angeles Dodgers early in the offseason -- and they have room in their budget. Co-chairperson Hank Steinbrenner and others in the organization are in favor of adding Ramirez's bat to the middle of the lineup.

Minor-league catcher Damian Taveras has been suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for the banned performance-enhancing drug Stanozolol. The suspension is effective at the start of the 2009 season. Taveras, who turned 19 on Nov. 28, hit .229 in 43 games in the Dominican Summer League.

According to Joe Girardi, Andy Pettitte  wants to rejoin the Yankees .
吉總表示,小派想要重回洋基.
"I talked to him recently and he is still excited about coming back," Girardi said yesterday of Pettitte, who hasn't accepted a one-year, $10 million deal on the table from the Yankees. "They continue to talk; it takes time. He is very excited about the additions to the club and he wants to be here. I think he could help."

Sabathia has the option of leaving after three years but he said the goal is to stay for all seven seasons on his $161 million deal.

CC Sabathia may be a California kid, but as of Thursday, he is officially a New Yorker.
沙胖或許是個土生土長的加州小子,但從星期四開始,他正式成為紐約客.
The pitcher many believed would leave money on the table to pitch in his home state was formally introduced Thursday at a Yankee Stadium press conference, one that also marked the introduction of A.J. Burnett.
這位原先被預料會捨棄洋基的優渥條件而留在西岸打球的左投,星期四在老洋基球場的記者會上正式宣布加入洋基.
另一位與他一起加盟的還有A.J. Burnett.
Not only did Sabathia get his introduction to the New York media, he also got a pep talk from the biggest Yankee fan there is - George Steinbrenner.
沙胖不只在記者會上被介紹給紐約的球迷,他還得到最大尾的洋基迷---大老闆George Steinbrenner的鼓勵.
After the press conference, Hal Steinbrenner, team president Randy Levine, GM Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi took Sabathia and A.J. Burnett into Girardi's office, where a phone call was put in to George Steinbrenner in Tampa.

Before the call, Sabathia was grinning while he slipped into his XXL No. 52, as he and his wife, Amber, made it clear that they were leaving the West Coast behind them to start a new life in the metropolitan area, having looked for houses in northern New Jersey on Wednesday.

"It took longer than people wanted," Sabathia said of his prolonged free-agent pursuit. "But I planned on wherever I play is where I'm going to live. I made the decision to play here, so I'm going to live here."

But what about the opt-out clause that would allow Sabathia to escape his contract - and the Bronx - after the 2011 season? The pitcher said his agents sought the clause in negotiations with every team, but he's not planning on putting it to use.

And so begins the Yankees' latest quest for championship No. 27, one that is now built around the 6-7, 290-pound former Cy Young winner. Having acquired several big-name pitchers in the past five or six years who were expected to lead the Yankees to the promised land - think Jeff Weaver, Javier Vazquez and Carl Pavano - Cashman is now betting on Sabathia and Burnett to help stabilize a rotation that has had plenty of problems in recent seasons.

Sabathia made it clear that the Yankees were always high on his list, as were the Brewers and Angels. The Yankees pounced with their initial six-year, $140 million offer on Nov.14, while Milwaukee offered the lefthander a five-year, $100 million deal. The Angels never extended an official offer, essentially killing Sabathia's chances of pitching in his home state.

After meeting with Cashman, Girardi and Reggie Jackson on the day before the winter meetings, Sabathia had a good feeling about the Yankees. But it wasn't until Cashman flew to northern California two days later that Sabathia made his decision.

It's not often that a free agent signs a five-year, $82.5 million contract and is the No. 2 attraction at his own introductory press conference, but A.J. Burnett is more than happy to share the spotlight with $161 million man CC Sabathia.

Burnett played second fiddle to Roy Halladay in Toronto and appears comfortable working the day after Sabathia.

"Him signing, pitching behind him, that makes it easier on me," said Burnett, who pointed to being more mature about how he throws as the reason he stayed healthy last year, when he went 18-10 and led the AL in strikeouts with 231.

While Sabathia was the Yankees' top target on the free-agent market this winter, plenty of people within the organization were trying to make a hard push for Burnett as well. Johnny Damon and Alex Rodriguez both made recruiting calls to Burnett, also making a point to make their feelings known to Brian Cashman that the 32-year-old righty would be a welcome addition to the rotation.

Burnett has electric stuff, but his injury history - he's been on the disabled list 10 times in his career - makes him a risky proposition for the Yankees, who just paid $39.95 million over four years for Carl Pavano to pitch 26 games. Apparently, Cashman felt the potential reward was worth that risk.

　　中華棒協昨天下午召開技術委員會議，會中通過高苑科技大學與北台灣科學技術學院兩校登錄為甲組球隊的申請案，使得目前的業餘甲組成棒球隊數增加到十七隊，其中學生球隊就佔了十五隊之多，為台灣業餘棒球歷史最高記錄。

大聯盟昨晚公布今年TYIB(This Year In Baseball)票選結果，郭泓志獲得球迷30.3%選票，大幅領先居次的光芒巴佛 (19.2%)，獲選為2008年最佳布局投手，後援表現備受肯定。
對於郭泓志獲得TYIB最佳布局投手，道奇官網認為難在他從傷痛站起，難在他努力保持整年健康。
小小郭今年繳出5勝3負、防禦率2.14，生涯新高的80局投球只被敲出60支安打，以往不穩的控球表現不復見，體現在數據上是高達96次三振，卻僅有21次保送。
道奇官網再度提起小小郭的傳奇故事，他到美國的第一場比賽，面對10人次三振7人，但也在該場比賽中手肘韌帶斷裂，驚天動地的表現後是看似永無止盡的復健，5年累積只投42.1局。
郭泓志自從1999年與道奇簽約，現在已是道奇體系內最資深的球員。今年球隊改以托瑞掌兵符後，他在開拔到中國進行的春訓賽上，以後援2局無失分吸引托瑞目光。
郭泓志真正開始獲得托瑞信任，是在7月底以後，他以穩定的後援表現換取更多的上場機會，且在終結者齋藤隆受傷後，托瑞欽點他為布局投手，直接將重責大任交到他身上。
對於明年的定位，小小郭日前謙虛表示，先發投手局數負擔大，終結者需要各方面都成熟配合，才能場場穩定演出，自認現階段還是最適合擔任中繼投手。
確定的是，不只道奇經理柯列堤將小小郭列為終結者候選人，官網也認為他可以和布拉克斯頓一較高下。
