Just before last season opened, Yankees manager Joe Girardi was asked about the inexperience at the back end of his starting rotation.

After handing Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy starting jobs, and seeing the disastrous results that included missing the playoffs, the Yankees were determined this offseason not to go that route again.

Hughes and Kennedy were the third teammates in major-league history to each make eight or more starts and not record a win. Eventually the Yankees had to turn to Darrell Rasner, Sidney Ponson, Dan Giese and Alfredo Aceves.
